Act of restitution of the Columbus House Museum to the heirs of Mayor Pedro Rico
April 20, 2026
Restitution to the Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias of two works by former mayor Pedro Rico
An out-of-court claim filed by CALIOPE ART LAW in 2023 has resulted in the restitution of two works seized during the Spanish Civil War and held in the Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias to the heirs of the Republican mayor, Pedro Rico. The Asturian museum was one of the first institutions in Spain to investigate the origin and inventory the seized works it received on deposit during the post-war period. The two works, "The Newspaper Vendor," which has been exhibited in one of the museum's galleries, and "The Picnic Area," are among the favorites of Pedro Rico's heirs, siblings Francisca and Pedro. As with the other works recovered from public museums, they will enjoy them in their homes for life, feeling closer to their grandfather, Pedro Rico, who so cherished his collection of Spanish genre art.
